By Elwood, Shar-Pei, trailrunner, and reluctant show dog.

Race Day. Finally! The day my wrinkles were meant to slice through mountain air like finely tuned aerodynamics.

My human clipped us together with the bungee line, and gave her usual pep talk: “Steady, Elwood.” I nodded solemnly, the way athletes do before glory… and then immediately ignored her. When the universe offers speed, you take it.

But first, a little backstory.

Two weeks earlier, we’d driven two days to a dog show in Slovakia. I’d assumed we were travelling for a race, something thrilling, muddy, and fast. But no. We were there to stand still. In a circle. While strangers debated the curvature of my tail. I did not thrive. My expression said, “I’m only here because she brought snacks.”

After that ordeal, we escaped to the mountains of Reit im Winkl. Finally, altitude. Fresh air. Pine needles. The good life. My paws tingled with anticipation. I was back in training mode, clocking miles, eating wind, living my best wrinkled life.

Then came Race Day.

The start line buzzed. I was vibrating with purpose. My human adjusted her harness, blissfully unaware of what was about to happen. And then… SHE appeared.

A snow-white sled dog. Elegant. Effortless. Probably smelled faintly of glacier and destiny. She trotted ahead, and that was it: Love at first sight.

The horn sounded. I launched. The bungee line stretched, my human yelped, and together we catapulted into history. Uphill.

Now, I’m a downhill specialist. Gravity and I are on excellent terms. But that day? I charged uphill like a Shar-Pei possessed. My human bounced behind me, somewhere between panic and admiration, gasping out what I can only assume were words of encouragement.

We flew. We slipped. We somehow didn’t die. At one point, I think she briefly achieved lift-off. But we kept running. Faster. Higher. Chasing the snow-white blur of my beloved.

And then, before I knew it, we were crossing the finish line. Twenty-five minutes faster than our previous best. My human collapsed in triumph. I posed for the crowd, every wrinkle glistening with victory.

The snow-white sled dog was nowhere to be seen,… gone, like all great loves, leaving only the memory of her pawprints on my heart.

So yes, in the ring I am a show dog, a portrait of composure, wrinkles arranged just so. But out there, attached to my human by one gloriously overstretched bungee line, I am something else entirely.

A trailblazer. A romantic. A Shar-Pei on a mission.

Elwood. Wrinkled. Determined. Occasionally aerodynamic. Always legendary.

Dear Airline,

I am writing to inquire about your in-flight accommodations for a dog of my stature and refinement. As a Shar Pei of considerable importance, I have recently learned that some airlines now allow dogs to travel in the cabin with their humans. Naturally, I have a few questions before I agree to such an arrangement.

I assume you offer a first-class option for wrinkle-enhanced passengers like myself. I require a window seat and ample legroom for my squishiness. Being tucked under a seat like a forgotten gym bag is not acceptable.

I also hear that humans are offered snacks and beverages during the flight. Does this service extend to me? I prefer something light yet satisfying, perhaps a filet of chicken, hand-fed to me at appropriate intervals. If not, I will settle for a cheese platter.

Will the flight attendants be available for ear scratches and admiring glances? I require a certain level of attention to maintain my morale during such a trying experience. Also, please advise on your policy regarding mid-flight lap privileges. My human claims I must stay in a carrier, but surely this is negotiable.

I have been informed that I must be removed from my carrier during security screening. This is troubling. I do not appreciate strangers lifting me in such an undignified manner. Can I request a velvet pillow to be placed on the conveyor belt so that I may glide through with grace?

As you may be aware, Shar Peis have a strict temperature preference. Not too hot, not too cold, and definitely not drafty. What measures are in place to ensure optimal wrinkle comfort? If necessary, I am happy to provide my own blanket, but I would prefer one from your premium selection. Preferably cashmere.

What steps does your airline take to prevent unruly passengers from disturbing my in-flight serenity? I have heard stories of seatmates attempting to pet, boop, or, horror of horrors, smoosh a Shar Pei’s face without formal consent. Will there be a protective barrier in place? Or should I practice my most dramatic sighs to convey my disapproval?

Upon landing, I expect a swift and dignified exit from the aircraft. Will I be required to wait while humans bumble about retrieving their luggage? Or will a dedicated concierge be available to escort me directly to the nearest soft patch of grass for a much-needed stretch and post-flight reflection?

I trust you will take my requests into consideration and ensure my first flight experience is befitting of a Shar Pei of my eminence. Please respond promptly, as I need to schedule my pre-flight spa day.

Sincerely,

Lord Elwood Bartholomew Best Pei

If you have a Shar Pei, or any dog for that matter, you’ve probably experienced them sniffing your face at some point. Whether it’s a gentle nose nudge in the morning or a full-on investigation after you’ve been out, dogs are naturally drawn to sniffing our faces. But why do they do it? Let’s explore the reasons behind this fascinating (and sometimes wet-nosed) behavior.

A Dog’s Nose Knows Everything

Dogs experience the world primarily through their sense of smell. While humans rely heavily on sight, a dog’s nose is their most powerful tool for understanding their surroundings. With up to 300 million scent receptors (compared to our mere 5-6 million), dogs can detect the faintest changes in odors—including those on your face.

Your skin, breath, and even sweat contain a wealth of information about where you’ve been, what you’ve eaten, and how you’re feeling. When your Shar Pei sniffs your face, they’re gathering all sorts of data, just like we do when we scroll through social media to catch up on someone’s day!

Recognizing You and Checking for Changes

Dogs use scent to recognize people. When a Shar Pei sniffs your face, they’re confirming that you’re “you.” They can tell if you’ve been around other dogs, eaten something interesting, or even if your mood has shifted.

Dogs are also incredibly sensitive to hormonal changes. Your breath and skin release subtle chemical signals that indicate stress, excitement, illness, or even pregnancy. So, if your dog suddenly becomes more interested in sniffing your face than usual, they might be picking up on something new.

Strengthening Bonds and Showing Affection

Face sniffing is often a sign of trust and affection. In the wild, wolves and other canines greet each other with face-to-face interactions, licking, and sniffing. Your Shar Pei’s nose boops could be their way of saying, “I love you” or “I’m glad you’re here.”

Puppies, in particular, learn to sniff and lick their mother’s face as a way of bonding and seeking comfort. If your dog is particularly affectionate, they may carry this behavior into adulthood.

Learning About Your Emotions

Dogs are highly attuned to human emotions. Research suggests that they can read our facial expressions and even detect shifts in our body chemistry. By sniffing your face, your Shar Pei might be checking in on your mood—whether you’re happy, sad, or stressed.

If your dog tends to sniff you more when you’re upset, they could be trying to comfort you. Some dogs even become extra cuddly when they sense their owners need emotional support.

Curiosity and Habit

Sometimes, a face sniff is just a dog being a dog. If they’ve learned that sniffing your face gets a reaction—like laughter, petting, or treats—they might keep doing it simply because they enjoy the interaction.

Additionally, if you have food crumbs, a new scent, or even just an interesting moisturizer on your face, your Shar Pei may feel the need to investigate up close.

Should You Discourage Face Sniffing?

For most people, a gentle sniff is harmless and even endearing. However, some dogs can get overly enthusiastic, leading to unwanted face-licking or sniffing at inconvenient times. If you’d prefer to set boundaries, you can gently redirect your dog by offering your hand to sniff instead or rewarding them for keeping a bit of personal space.

That said, if your Shar Pei has always been a face-sniffer, it’s likely a sign of their love and connection with you. In their world, a good sniff is just as meaningful as a hug or a kiss.

Dogs are fascinating creatures with an incredible ability to gather information through scent. When your Shar Pei sniffs your face, they’re not just being nosy—they’re checking in, learning about you, and strengthening your bond. So next time you get an unexpected nose nuzzle, just remember: your dog is saying hello in their own special way!

Hello, humans. It is I, Takkie the Wrinkled Angel, your favorite five-month-old Shar Pei. You may think that being a puppy is all about zoomies, naps, and chewing things I’m not supposed to. But no. My life is far more complicated.

Why? Because I have a wardrobe. A giant wardrobe.

And I’m not alone in this madness. Oh no. My best buddy Elwood is in this with me. We didn’t choose the fashion life, the fashion life chose us.

It all started when we went on vacation to Austria. Snow everywhere. White, fluffy, magical stuff just waiting to be jumped into! I was ready to dive headfirst, but my human had plans.

“Let’s get you dressed!” she said cheerfully.

Before I could escape, I was stuffed into my full-body winter coverall suit. FULL. BODY. Like a tiny astronaut preparing for a moon landing.

I sighed and turned to Elwood for support. But he wasn’t much help.

Elwood, my dear, goofy best friend, stood beside me looking just as ridiculous. He had a fleece coat that made him look like a grandpa, a hat that flopped over his eyes, and goggles that turned him into some kind of high-fashion spy dog. He looked at me, I looked at him, and we both knew: our dignity was gone.

Still, we ran through the snow, jumping and playing as best we could despite our fashion restrictions. Elwood’s fleece kept slipping down his back. My coverall made me waddle like a potato with legs. It was chaos. Beautiful, ridiculous chaos.

Now that we’re back home, the fashion show hasn’t stopped. I’m stuck wearing skirts and panties (because I’m in heat, apparently, and that means tiny dog underwear now rule my life) because my human says it’s “for my own good.” I don’t know what that means, but it does mean I have to strut around like a doll in a dog-sized tutu.

Elwood, meanwhile, has gotten used to his goggles. He likes them now. He thinks they make him look cool. And honestly? He might be right. Sometimes I catch him staring at himself in a window reflection, adjusting his hat like he’s some kind of dog model.

But let’s be clear: we are not always clothed.

When we’re inside or the weather is good, we are wild, free, and gloriously naked. We roll on the floor, stretch out our wrinkly legs, and bask in the joy of unburdened fur. My human lets us be our natural, beautiful, uncovered selves. No skirts. No goggles. No hats. Just pure, unfiltered dog.

However… there have been incidents.

Like the time Elwood and I attempted a wardrobe escape.

One day, while my human was busy, I decided I had had enough of my little skirt. I waddled up to Elwood, wiggled my butt, and barked in Morse code: Help me, brother.

Elwood immediately understood. He grabbed the edge of my skirt with his teeth and pulled. Unfortunately, skirts are apparently designed to stay on.

He tugged. I spun. He tugged harder. I somersaulted across the floor like a rolled-up burrito.

Determined, Elwood decided to switch tactics. He stood on my skirt, grabbed my panties, and yanked with the force of a dog who believes he is doing something heroic. Instead of freeing me, he ended up catapulting himself backward into the water bowl.

There was splashing. There was slipping. There was a very confused cat watching from a safe distance.

And then, we were caught.

Our human walked in, took one look at the disaster scene, and laughed until she had tears in her eyes. Instead of being mad, she picked up a soggy, embarrassed Elwood, gave him a big hug, and said, “You two are ridiculous. And I love you.”

Now, if you’ll excuse me, Elwood and I are about to go roll in the dirt completely naked before the next fashion crisis begins.

I love Bunny Day because I get to run as fast as my paws will go, chase the bunny, and then… well, usually Mom comes over and takes it before I can fully investigate. But not today. Today was… different.

It started off normal. The bunny was zooming, I was zooming—it was amazing! But then, halfway through, the bunny vanished! What kind of sorcery is this?! I spun around. No bunny. I sniffed the air. No bunny. I even ran in some extra fancy circles to look heroic. Still no bunny.

So, I figured maybe I was supposed to just run to the end, you know, to keep things professional. I trotted to the finish line and waited for Mom. She took a while. She was waddling toward me like a bundled-up penguin, with stuff dripping from her face. Humans are so weird sometimes.

But then—plot twist—the trainer said we weren’t done! What?! He made us go all the way back to where the bunny stopped. Do you know how far that is? It’s like a million sniff-lengths!

Finally, we got there, and oh wow, there was the bunny! Just sitting there, waiting for me. Mom let me go, and I zoomed. I grabbed it, and guess what? Today’s bunny was special. It wasn’t just the usual plastic toy—it had fur! And it smelled amazing. So, naturally, I stuffed the whole thing in my mouth. All of it. This bunny was my masterpiece.

Mom showed up a little later, looking very dramatic. “Let it go, Mickey,” she said. I was like, Nope. This is my bunny. I caught it fair and square.

She even took off my muzzle, thinking she’d outsmart me. Amateur move, Mom. Then she started wiggling her fingers in my mouth, but I kept my jaw clamped like the champion I am.

That’s when the trainer came over. He said something like, “Still cuddling?” (which was rude, by the way). Then he tapped me on the nose. Just a little tap. And BOOM—my mouth popped open, and the bunny escaped! I couldn’t believe it! One second I was the king of Bunny Land, and the next, I was standing there with nothing but mud and betrayal.

Mom started laughing, and the trainer looked all proud, but they don’t get it. That bunny and I had a connection. I tasted victory, and it was glorious.

Still, I let it slide. They looked happy, and I like it when Mom’s happy. Plus, I’m already planning my next move. Next Bunny Day, I’ll be quicker, smarter, and maybe bring some duct tape for my mouth.

For now, though, I’ll just nap. Chasing bunnies and outsmarting humans is exhausting work.

There is the greatfulness that it’s given to them to reach this respectable age. But also the reality that the dogs that once chased each other around the yard now prefer napping in their favorite sunspots. Frodo, our senior boy, who used to be a bundle of energy, especially slowed down after an accident left him with arthritis. He still loves to roam the yard and nearby fields, but now he does so at a gentler pace, savoring every step.

To support them in this phase, we adjusted their diets. Food with fewer calories, but packed with the right nutrients, has been key to keeping them healthy without the risk of weight gain, which can worsen joint issues. For Frodo, we added supplements like glucosamine and omega-3 fatty acids, which have made a noticeable difference. Despite his arthritis, he still greets each day with a wagging tail and determination to explore his surroundings. Everything at his own speed, of course!

Though Frodo has slowed down, he still loves his daily walks. It’s not about covering distance anymore but enjoying the moment. Watching him roam the yard or walk through the fields brings us as much joy as it does him. His pace may have changed, but the curiosity in his eyes hasn’t. He still loves to sniff every corner, and sometimes we catch him lying in the grass, happily watching the world go by.

To keep our older shar pei comfortable, we’ve adapted our home by adding orthopedic beds, underfloor heating, and anti-slip rugs. These small changes have made a big difference. Frodo’s favorite spot used to be the couch, but now it is his orthopedic bed, which helps with his arthritis, especially on colder days. The underfloor heating keeps him warm, and the rugs give him confidence to move around the house without slipping. These adjustments have ensured that even though his pace has slowed, he still moves comfortably and happily around the home.

Vet visits have become more frequent as our Shar Pei have aged. Frodo’s arthritis was diagnosed after his accident, and regular check-ups, including bloodwork and x rays help us stay on top of managing his pain and mobility.
We take our seniors for check-ups at least twice a year. These visits allow us to monitor for age-related conditions like heart disease or vision problems. Routine blood work has become part of our normal routine, helping us catch potential issues early. For Frodo, early intervention has been key to managing his arthritis, ensuring he still enjoys his favorite walks with minimal discomfort.

Keeping the skin and fur clean has always been part of our routine, but it’s even more important now that they’re seniors. Many shar pei do not like a bath, but Frodo loves his “spa sessions”. We gently clean his fur and check his skin for inflammation. These quiet bonding moments have become something we all look forward to.
We also keep their ears clean and check their teeth regularly, especially after Frodo had a small ear inflammation last year.

Even though they’ve slowed down physically, our Shar Pei’s minds are still sharp. Frodo may not chase mice anymore, but he’s just as clever when it comes to figuring out interactive treat dispensers. One of our favorite memories was when we introduced him to a new treat dispenser toy. We thought it would take him a while to figure it out, but in true Frodo fashion, he had the treats out in no time, his face filled with satisfaction. These moments remind us that even as they age, they still enjoy a good challenge, and it’s just as rewarding for us to see their excitement.
Tosca is our 12 year old girl, she has never been the sporty type. But she loves car rides. She joins us in the car whenever possible. That dog really goes places and all the impressions are great to stimulate her mind.

We’ve learned that keeping a consistent routine is key to helping our Shar Pei feel secure. Frodo, in particular, appreciates the predictability of his days. Feeding times, walks, and bedtime happen at the same time every day, and that structure helps reduce any anxiety he might feel as he grows older.

There have been times when Frodo seemed more anxious, especially when he’s feeling stiff. On those days, we try different calming techniques like soft music or extra cuddles, and they work wonders. One evening, after a cold wet day, Frodo climbed up beside us on the couch, put his head on our lap, and let out the longest, most contented sigh. It’s moments like these that remind us of the importance of emotional support, especially for our senior dogs.

Caring for senior Shar Pei has been a journey filled with love, patience, and plenty of lessons. Yes, they move a little slower, but they’ve shown us that there’s beauty in taking life at a slower pace. Every quiet walk, every gentle nuzzle, and every shared moment is a reminder of the deep bond we have with them.

They may not be the energetic pups they once were, but their joy for life hasn’t diminished. With the right care, like adjusting the diet, giving gentle exercise, regular vet visits, and making the home a comfortable place, they continue to live a happy and fulfilling life. These golden years have only strengthened our connection, and we’re grateful for every day we get to spend with our beloved Shar Pei, who still love to explore, one slow step at a time.

Shar Pei have long been perceived as a breed that avoids water. This is not surprising as originating as guard dogs in China, their roles did not involve water-related tasks. However, recent years have seen a notable shift, with more and more Shar Pei engaging in and enjoying water sports and activities.

This change can be attributed to several key factors. Modern Shar Pei owners are increasingly introducing their puppies to water at an early age, which helps diminish the natural apprehension many dogs have towards it. By using positive reinforcement techniques such as treats, toys, and praise, owners create positive associations with water, encouraging their dogs to see it as a source of fun rather than something to fear. Additionally, selective breeding practices have focused on producing lines with temperaments more open to new experiences. Shar Pei have indeed become our close companions and are happy to take part in more and more activities. Their inquisitive nature is shining through, and they are happy to explore new activities.

Although still surprising for some, we can now see Shar Pei participating in a variety of water sports. Want to try it out with your Pei? There are plenty to choose from!

Many dogs, including Shar Pei, find swimming a refreshing and fun way to exercise, especially during the hot summer months. It provides a full-body workout, improves cardiovascular health, and is gentle on the joints. Starting with shallow water helps build confidence before moving to deeper areas. And the simplest way to start? Dive in yourself! Your Pei will most likely follow you to join in on the fun. And don’t forget to bring a water-safe toy!

Now if your Pei likes swimming and retrieving, dock-diving could be a sport for them! It’s a fun summer sport that involves dogs jumping from a dock into water to retrieve toys, combining physical exercise with excitement. It is also a competitive sport; dogs compete for distance or height of the jump, making it a great way to burn energy and improve physical fitness.

If your Pei enjoys water, but mostly prefers to stay dry – canoeing and kayaking may be the activity for you! They allow your wrinkly companion to experience water without necessarily getting wet. They can sit or lie in the canoe or kayak, experiencing the water’s movement and sounds, which can help them become more comfortable with aquatic environments.

Paddleboarding provides a stable platform for dogs to safely enjoy water activities. They can sit or stand on the board, allowing them to participate in a calm and controlled manner. It’s an excellent way for dogs to develop balance and confidence on the water.

Whichever one you choose, engaging in water sports provides several great benefits for Shar Pei. These activities offer excellent cardiovascular workouts, improving overall fitness and aiding in weight management. They also stimulate the mind, reducing boredom and associated behavioral issues. Participating in these activities fosters a stronger bond between dogs and their owners as they work together and share new experiences. Additionally, water activities help Shar Pei cool down, particularly during the hot summer months, preventing overheating.

The increasing trend of Shar Pei embracing water sports is a testament to their adaptability and resilience. Through early socialization, positive reinforcement, and even selective breeding, Shar Pei are overcoming their historical aversion to water. As more owners introduce their dogs to aquatic adventures, the sight of a Shar Pei happily engaging in water sports is becoming more common, redefining our understanding of this unique breed.

So, whether you have a Shar Pei or any other breed, consider introducing your furry friend to the joys of water sports. The benefits are immense, and the memories you create will be priceless.

Dive in, paddle out, and make a splash with your dog today!

In a world where athleticism often conjures images of sleek, agile breeds racing through obstacle courses or elegantly leaping over hurdles, there exists another realm of potential waiting to be explored – the participation of non-sporting dog breeds in sports. While breeds like Border Collies and Retrievers dominate traditional sporting events, many dogs outside this category possess incredible agility, intelligence, and enthusiasm that can be channeled into various sports and activities.

So why should non-sporting breeds engage in sports? It is certainly not what they were bred for, nor will their results exceed or even compare to those of sporting breeds.

However, the benefits of engaging non-sporting breeds in physical activities are manifold. Physical exercise is crucial for maintaining a dog’s overall health and well-being. It helps manage weight, strengthens muscles, improves cardiovascular health, and enhances flexibility and coordination. Beyond the physical benefits, sports provide mental stimulation, which is essential for keeping dogs intellectually engaged and preventing boredom-induced behaviors.

Moreover, participating in sports fosters a stronger bond between dogs and their owners. It promotes teamwork, communication, and mutual trust as both parties work together towards a common goal. For many non-sporting breeds, these activities tap into their inherent skills and instincts, providing them with a sense of purpose and accomplishment.

There is a huge list of sports to choose from, any one of which can be done at any and every level of intensity and competitiveness as the owner wishes and their dog’s ability and health allows. We want to explore the different ways to stay active with your Shar Pei, the health benefits, as well as precautions.

Join us, as we dive deeper into this topic over the next two weeks!

An exciting event is on the horizon – the Shar Pei Olympics!

Scheduled to coincide with the 2024 Olympics in Paris, this event aims to raise awareness about the importance of movement and sports for all dog breeds, regardless of their traditional roles.

During the EFSPC Shar Pei Olympics we will showcase various activities tailored to the unique abilities and characteristics of the Shar Pei breed. Shar Pei are often underestimated in athletic prowess. However, these dogs possess remarkable agility, strength, and intelligence that can shine through in sports like agility courses, canicross, coursing, and various water sports. All you need is the right approach and assessment of your dog’s abilities and health.

During the Shar Pei Olympics we want to talk about inclusivity in canine sports. By highlighting the capabilities of non-traditional sporting breeds, we want to encourage dog owners and enthusiasts to explore new avenues of physical activity with their pets – because every dog, regardless of breed, size, or shape, can benefit from and enjoy physical activity, given proper training, support, and consideration for individual health needs.

As we look forward to the Shar Pei Olympics starting in Paris on July 26th, it’s clear that athleticism knows no bounds. There are countless opportunities to discover and nurture their athletic potential. Engaging in sports not only enhances their physical and mental well-being but also strengthens the bond between dogs and their human companions.

So, let’s embrace the athlete within every dog and embark on a journey of exploration, fun, and mutual growth through sports.

Join us in celebrating the Shar Pei Olympics and let’s cheer for these wrinkled wonders as they demonstrate agility, grace, and the joy of everyday movement. Together, let’s pave the way for a future where every dog can thrive through physical activity – one leap, sprint, and wagging tail at a time.

You’re having a rough day, and you slump down on the couch, sighing dramatically. Your Shar Pei, Sir Wrinkles, walks over, sits down next to you, and rests his head on your lap, staring up at you with those soulful eyes. You could swear he’s saying, “Tell me all about it.” So, you start telling him about your boss, your overdue bills, and your annoying neighbor, and Sir Wrinkles just sits there, looking wise beyond his years. By the end of your rant, you feel a bit better, convinced your dog totally gets you. But does he really? This, dear Shar Pei friends, is anthropomorphism at its best!

Anthropomorphism is why we imagine our Shar Pei plotting mischief or understanding every word of our conversations.
Picture this: you come home to find your favorite shoes thoroughly chewed up, and your Shar Pei looks up at you with those wrinkly eyes, as if to say, “Who, me? I’ve been framed!” While this humanization can make our bonds stronger, it also means we sometimes expect them to act more like us than their true doggy selves.

On the bright side, anthropomorphism helps us forge stronger emotional bonds with our pets. Talking to your Shar Pei as if they understand every word can turn a bad day around to a good day. Imagine telling your Shar Pei about your terrible day, and they just sit there, head tilted, looking as concerned as any best friend could. This connection can improve our mental health and reduce stress. Our dogs become our therapists, even if their best advice is a slobbery kiss.

However, our tendency to humanize our pets can lead to some comical and not-so-comical misunderstandings:

Misinterpretation of Behavior: We might see our dog’s actions through a human lens. So, when your Shar Pei hides under the bed, you might think they’re feeling guilty about chewing those shoes, but they might just be scared of the vacuum cleaner!

Unrealistic Expectations: Expecting our dogs to understand complex emotions can set us up for disappointment. You might hope your Shar Pei will rescue you like Lassie, but in reality, they’re more likely to just look at you and yawn.

Risk of Humanization: Treating dogs too much like humans can ignore their actual needs. Sure, sharing a pizza with your Shar Pei sounds fun, but their tummy might not agree!

Communication Issues: Assuming our dogs understand human language can lead to some pretty funny moments. You might explain the house rules in detail, but don’t be surprised when your Shar Pei just wags their tail and goes back to napping.

Ethical Concerns: Attributing human motivations to our pets can skew our understanding of their true nature. Just because your Shar Pei gives you a sad look doesn’t mean they’re plotting an escape, they probably just want a treat.

Anthropomorphism isn’t just about how we see our pets; it’s everywhere in culture and media. Think of Disney’s Simba singing about his future kingdom or Pixar’s Dory with her cute forgetfulness. These characters, with their human like traits and emotions, make us laugh, cry, and connect deeply with the animal world. Who hasn’t felt empathy and cried watching Simba and Bambi or laughed at Dory’s adventures?

This human-animal connection also fuels our empathy towards real animals. When we see animals portrayed with human-like emotions, we’re more likely to rally for their cause. Imagine watching a documentary where a baby panda, with its wide, curious eyes, stares right into the camera. You can’t help but feel protective and want to ensure its safety and well-being.

In the end, while anthropomorphism makes our relationships with animals richer and more emotionally fulfilling, it’s essential to strike a balance. Understanding and respecting the natural behaviors and needs of animals like the Shar Pei ensures they stay happy and healthy while still allowing us to enjoy their unique companionship. So, next time your Shar Pei gives you that “I totally understand you” look, cherish the moment, but remember, they’re wonderful just the way they are, quirky doggy habits and all!

Welcome June, Welcome summer!

As we head out to the sunny outdoors, these days it is important to keep our furry friends safe and comfortable.

Here are our 10 tips for keeping your Pei safe and comfortable during the upcoming summer months:

Hydration is Key

Shar Pei, like all dogs, can easily become dehydrated in the heat. Always carry fresh water and a portable bowl when you’re out and about. Offer your dog water frequently, even if they don’t seem thirsty. A hydrated dog is a happy dog!

Avoid the Hottest Part of the Day

Sun rays are most intense between 10am and 4pm. Plan your walks and outdoor activities in the earlier hours or later in the evening, when temperatures are cooler. Both you and your Pei are sure to enjoy it more, and you will avoid the added risks of heatstroke or excessive sun exposure.

Watch for Signs of Overheating

Dogs are more susceptible to heatstroke than people. Symptoms of overheating include:

Excessive panting, drooling, lethargy, vomiting, uncoordinated movements, collapse.

If you notice any of these signs of distress, move your dog to a cool, shaded place immediately and offer water. In severe cases, contact your veterinarian right away.

Provide Shade and Cool Resting Spots

Whether you’re at home or out for a picnic, always ensure that your Shar Pei has access to shaded areas. Portable pet tents, umbrellas, and natural shade from trees can provide much needed relief from direct sun. At home, cool indoor areas with fans or air conditioning can help keep your dog comfortable during the hot summer months.

Protect the Paws

Hot pavement and sand can burn your dog’s paws. Before heading out, check the ground temperature by placing the palm of your hand on it for a few seconds. If it’s too hot for your hand, it’s too hot for your dog’s paws! Walking on grass or dirt paths is always a safer option. However, if walks on pavement are unavoidable, dog booties can help provide protection from burns.

Sunscreen

We usually remember our own sunscreen, but what about our pets? Animals can also get sunburnt, particularly those with lighter fur color and shorter fur.

To help protect your Pei against sun exposer, you can apply pet-specific sunscreen to areas like ears, noses, muzzles, and tummies. However, we recommend to avoid human sunscreen, as it may contain ingredients harmful to dogs.

Limit Intense Exercise

While exercise is important, avoid overly strenuous activities during hot weather. Instead, during high temperatures, opt for leisurely walks and gentle play sessions. Always pay close attention to your dog’s energy levels and take frequent breaks.

NEVER Leave Your Dog in a Parked Car

Even with the windows cracked open, the temperature inside a parked car can rise dramatically in minutes. Never leave your dog alone in a parked car, even if to just run a few quick errands. This can pose a fatal risk to your dog. It’s best to leave your Shar Pei at home, in a cool, comfortable environment.

Know Your Dog’s Limits

Every dog is different, and it is essential to understand your Shar Pei’s specific needs and limitations. Some dogs tolerate heat better than others, and age, health, and coat color or length can play a role in how well your’s handles the sun. Always err on the side of caution and prioritize your dog’s well-being.

Protect Against Parasites

Our last tip is not about keeping cool in the sun, however, it is important to remember that parasites such as fleas, ticks, mosquitos and sandflies are very common in the warm summer months. These insects can irritate and spread disease, so it is important to protect your dog against them. There is a whole array of products, and we recommend you choose the one that works best for you and your dog. However, no product works 100% of the time, so careful inspections of your dog’s fur, paws, ears, and mouth after each walk is a must!

With just a little preparation and vigilance, summer can be a fun and enjoyable time for you and your Shar Pei!
